The QuICS Hartree Postdoctoral Fellowship is awarded to exceptional candidates who have recently completed a PhD, to enable them to pursue research on a wide range of topics at the intersection of quantum information and computer science, in collaboration with QuICS faculty. Recipients of the Hartree Fellowship are driven, with a high degree of intellectual maturity, and the fellowship gives them considerable freedom to choose their research topics and collaborations.

The Hartree Fellowship lasts for 2-3 years, and comes with a competitive salary, and funding for research expenses. Applicants for the Hartree Fellowship may also be considered for other postdoctoral positions at QuICS. Candidates from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Past recipients of the Hartree Fellowship have gone on to successful research careers in both industry and academia, at companies such as Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft, and at academic institutions such as Middlebury College, Peking University, Virginia Tech, and the University of Waterloo.

The Hartree Fellowship is named after Douglas Hartree, who made fundamental discoveries in physics and computation, including early work on numerical analysis at the National Bureau of Standards, the predecessor of NIST. The Hartree Fellowship helps ensure the vitality of the research environment at QuICS, by attracting some of the top talent worldwide, in all areas of quantum information science, in order to stimulate new collaborations and the exploration of new research directions.
