In a recent article in Nanophotonics, we have demonstrated that high-Q photonic crystal ring resonators, which we previously demonstrated using a gear-shaped modulation pattern, can also be realized based on rod-like and slit-like modulation patterns.  High-Q, slow light, and defect mode localization are demonstrated in these different unit cell geometries.

Varying the unit cell geometry can be important for different applications of these resonators, for example, in cavity QED experiments with either embedded on introduced quantum emitters. Moreover, the work indicates the generality with which high performance can be achieved in the photonic crystal microring platform.
