High School Student Earns Accolades for Summer Research with Gorshkov Group
Jason Youm, a high school student who performed summer research with JQI Fellow Alexey Gorshkov, placed in the top dozen competitors in the physics and astronomy category at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). He presented research completed under the mentorship of Gorshkov and JQI graduate student Joseph Iosue where he performed calculations to help investigate how quantum computers can perform certain tasks significantly faster than their traditional counterparts.
Particle Physics and Quantum Simulation Collide in New Proposal
Zohreh Davoudi is collaborating with experts in quantum computing technologies to ensure that the relevant problems in her fields of nuclear and particle physics are poised to reap the benefits when quantum simulations mature. Davoudi along with JQI Fellow Alexey Gorshkov and other colleagues proposed a quantum simulation that might be possible to implement soon. They proposal involves using superconducting circuits to simulate a simplified model of collisions between fundamental particles called quarks and mesons (which are themselves made of quarks and antiquarks).

JQI Fellow Alexey Gorshkov has won the 2024 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Photonics Society Quantum Electronics Award.
JQI Researchers Win 2023 UMD Quantum Invention of the Year Award
A team of JQI researchers and their colleagues have won in the quantum category of the UMD Invention of the Year Award. They are honored for developing a new method for counting particles of light—photons—without destroying them.
