Abstract: I will describe the theory of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), which allows the dynamics of nearly integrable many-body quantum systems to be accurately modeled. GHD has two assumptions: the continuum approximation and local equilibration to the Generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). We use bundles of 1D Bose gases to test GHD and show that the theory works remarkably well for quite a long time after even very large trap quenches and even for as few as 10 atoms per 1D gas. We have also performed wavefunction quenches. For some time after such a quench the GGE is not satisfied, so GHD cannot be applied. As a function of density and coupling strength, we experimentally study this time, for which there are not robust theoretical predictions.

JQI Seminars are held on Mondays during Fall and Spring semesters at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time in Room 2400 of the Atlantic Building. University of Maryland affiliates may participate using Zoom. The seminars are also livestreamed on the JQI YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/JQInews), which supports audience participation in the chat interface.
